The Railway & Marine Art of Ted Parker

Sunrise at Steel Rd

64cm x 73cm, oil on Canvas

Deep in the Cheviot hills is the lonely outpost of Steel Rd, a lonely station on the former ‘Waverley’ route from Carlisle to Edinburgh, it was a continuous steep climb for Northbound trains leaving Hawick a few miles south to the South. Typical motive power were the Gresley V2s with their typical staccato exhaust beat which could be heard for miles if the wind was in the right direction, 60868 blackens the sky as she toils up the 1 in 70 gradient with a heavy freight train for Scotland circa 1966.
