For possibly the last time as the line was closed shortly after our visit we did some street running through the old historic town of Fauresmith, with some unique views of a double headed class 19d and a class 24 blasting up a main street complete with bemused pedestrians and daily traffic looking on. We then turn west to Kimberley behind a 25NC for a final short trip with the 6J before it retired to the Kimberly Railway Museum, then we travel into the barren rugged landscapes over the Lootsberg Pass, again using an authentic Mixed train., and down through the Torwaterpoort Gorge into the little Karoo.
We then enter Beyer Garret country as we steam through the Cape Province taking in the Montague Pass, the George -Knysna line featuring the famous Kaimans River Bridge and some wonderful scenes at Dawn over the Knysna Lagoon and wetlands around Sedgfield.
We then turn west to visit the wide and varied landscapes around Caledon and Sir Lowry’s Pass in some spectacular weather conditions, then finally into the wine growing landscapes around Franshhoek and a final ride down the branch line to Simonstown.
This was probably the last great Steam Trek in South Africa to take in such a wide variety of Motive power and routs, many of which are now closed and the pool of serviceable motive power to haul a train of this magnitude is severely depleted.
Running Time approx 3 Hours, 4 x 3 Aspect
