The brand new Peppercorn Class A1 60163 “Tornado” ran a tour from Crewe to Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast, and returned over the “Settle to Carlisle” in May 2010. We also had a camera on board the train and the Footplate plus a couple of cameras by the lineside.
This DVD illustrates this highly scenic line at its best with dramatic aerial footage of the train as it crosses the many Viaducts over estuaries and through beautiful coastal scenery, we even manage to catch a glimpse the tidal Bore as the train crosses the Leven Viaduct at Ulverston which makes this programme eminently watchable even if you are not a railway enthusiast.
We also see what life is like at the sharp end as our cameras get a very privileged view from the footplate up the coastal stretch of line between Whitehaven and St Bees, plus behind the scenes activities on board the train.
A few weeks later we repeat the Itinerary with British Railways Standard Class 8 Pacific 71000 “Duke of Gloucester” producing an equally dramatic performance as “Tornado” once again we join the crew as they feed coal and water into this very powerful locomotive giving back in return a memorable performance over the Cumbrian Fells.
